BUDAPEST, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Jia Qinglin, head of China's top political advisory body, on Thursday met with Hungary's parliament speaker and put forward a package of proposals for further expanding friendship and cooperation between China and Hungary.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), held talks with Szili Katalin, speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly in Budapest Thursday morning.     During the meeting, Jia suggested that the two countries should maintain high-level contact so as to deepen political trust. NEW YORK, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Tuesday that China and the United States are not rivals but partners in cooperation and they should work together to further strengthen bilateral relations.     In a speech delivered at a luncheon co-hosted by the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations and other friendly American organizations, Wen said China-U.S. relations have made significant progress since his first official visit to the United States in 2003.     High-level contacts between the two sides are more frequent than ever before, said Wen, who arrived here Tuesday to attend meetings at the headquarters of the United Nations.     "There are now over 60 dialogue and consultative mechanisms between our two countries. The Strategic Economic Dialogue and the Strategic Dialogue have in particular played an important part in increasing strategic mutual trust between the two sides."     On economic cooperation, Wen noted that China and the United States are now each other's second largest trading partners.     Dialogue and cooperation have also extended to a number of new areas, such as energy resources and climate change, he added.     In addition, China and the United States have maintained communication and coordination on global security issues such as counter-terrorism and non-proliferation and on regional and international hot-spot issues, the Chinese premier said.     The ever-deepening friendship between the two peoples is an integral part of growing relations between the two countries, Wen said.     He also expressed sincere appreciation to the American people from all walks of life for their abiding commitment to China-U.S. friendship and extended heartfelt gratitude to the U.S. government and people for their strong support for China's earthquake relief and efforts in hosting the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.     As to the China-U.S. relations after the upcoming U.S. presidential election, Wen said China hopes to maintain and develop the constructive and cooperative relations with the United States whoever becomes the next U.S. president. When asked about China's food safety, he said that the Chinese government has paid great attention to the country's recent infant formula milk power contamination incident and adopted a series of resolute measures to deal with it.     China will take vigorous measures to ensure the quality of products and food safety, Wen said, adding that China's exports will meet both international standards and requirements of importers and China is willing to enhance cooperation with the U.S. in this regard.     U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, and Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations Carla A. Hills also made speeches during the luncheon.     They shared the view that enhancing China-U.S. cooperation is vital to the maintaining of world peace and stability and the resolution of many issues facing the world, and the U.S. should continue to maintain engagements and cooperation with China.     During his three-day stay in New York, Wen will attend a high-level UN meeting for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Thursday and the general debate of the 63rd UN General Assembly Wednesday. BEIJING, Sept. 11 -- Inflation eased to its lowest level in August since June last year, giving the government more policy leeway to prevent an economic slowdown.     The consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, rose 4.9 percent year-on-year, compared to 6.3 percent in July, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said yesterday.     The CPI has been sliding since May, but still many economists were caught by surprise by last month's drop because they had forecast it to be above 5 percent. The month-on-month fall was only 0.1 percent.     But last month's producer price index (PPI), a gauge of factory gate inflation, rose a record 10.1 percent year-on-year, after jumping 10 percent in July.     Nevertheless, the low CPI figure gives the government "more policy room to sustain growth," Citigroup economist Ken Peng said.     He suggested the authorities consider further policy changes favoring growth, which could shift to full gear next month.     Economic growth has been slowing since the second quarter of last year, when the government adopted monetary and credit measures to rein in inflation and prevent the economy from overheating further.     Yet economists began warning of a recession since the beginning of this year, especially because the country's export sector, a key growth engine, started losing steam on weaker foreign demand.     The government responded it would strive to maintain a stable economic growth this year, leading to speculation that it would soon ease the tightening measures. But any step to stimulate the economy, such as lower interest rates or faster loan growth, risks spurring demand and stoking inflation again.     "Unless there's an abrupt slowdown, there's no need for a major change in the marco-control measures," said Lian Ping, an economist with the Bank of Communications. "The current 10 percent GDP growth is largely seen as acceptable."     The CPI rise is likely to stabilize around 5 percent during the rest of the year, he said, because food prices may continue to drop. Inflation fell last month mainly because of a drop in food prices, which make up one-third of the inflation basket. Food prices slid 0.4 percent from July.     A falling inflation rate gives the government a good chance to lift its price control on products such as fuel, water, and electricity further, Lehman Brothers economist Sun Mingchun said.     In the past year, policymakers have managed to freeze the prices of public utilities, and fuel and power tariff. They introduced temporary price curbs on some other goods, too, to rein in inflation.     Yet soaring labor and raw material costs, reflected in the rising PPI figure, have eaten into the profit of local enterprises because price control and fierce competition prevented them from passing the inflationary pressure on to consumers.     Such price liberalization could make the CPI rise again in the next few months, Sun said.     "But if implemented in a gradual and orderly way, inflation should remain below 6 percent year-on-year during the rest of the year."

BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- The country's top 500 giants are narrowing gap with foreign counterparts, but they still lag behind, the China Enterprise Confederation announced in its release of the 2008 Top 500 Chinese enterprises list on Saturday.     According to the report, the total revenue of the top 500 Chinese enterprises reached 2.99 trillion U.S. dollars (1 dollar=7.3046 yuan, calculated under the exchange rate in 2007), profits 188.4 billion U.S. dollars and assets 8.17 trillion U.S. dollars.Revenues were equivalent to 12.67 percent of the global top 500, profits equaled 11.85 percent and assets 7.79 percent, compared with 10.7 percent, 6.5 percent and 7.8 percent respectively last year.     Analysts said the growing proportion of revenue and profits indicated that Chinese companies had become more competitive and profitable.     Confederation deputy president Li Jianming said the country's growing economy had benefited these enterprises in spite of price hikes for oil and other materials.     He also said private enterprises had grown more robust and capable of taking in advanced technology and management from world giants. They accounted for about a fifth of the country's top 500 enterprises.     In addition, their rising investment in research and development and their emphasis on exploring the domestic market increased competition. The growth rate of net profits of the country's top 500 was 19 times faster than that of the world's top500.     However, another confederation deputy president Wang Jiming said Chinese enterprises still fell behind in innovation, investment in research and development, and the ability to operate internationally. KUNMING, April 8 (Xinhua) -- China Eastern Airlines (CEA) will offer compensation of up to 400 yuan (57 U.S. dollars) to passengers affected in flights where pilots deliberately turned their aircraft around.     Passengers whose flights were canceled will get 400 yuan compensation.
