WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official said on Monday that China will continue to cooperate with other countries to cope with the current financial crisis.     "For the international community, the most urgent task is to join efforts to stem further deterioration and spread of the crisis -- the major threat to global growth -- and restore global economic and financial stability," said Yi Gang, vice governor of the People's Bank of China     "China will continue to strengthen its cooperation with concerned countries and hopes that all governments will work together to overcome the current difficulties and restore international financial stability," he said in a statement at the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank.     He urged the two Bretton Woods Institutions to "fulfill their mandates to maintain global monetary and financial stability and facilitate sustainable, balanced growth."     The fund should give the surveillance priority to the ongoing financial turmoil, deepen its analysis, learn lessons, and listen to the opinions of member countries, said the senior official of China's central bank.     "From the medium- and long-term perspective, the fund must address the inherent deficiencies of the current international monetary system and foster an international financial architecture adaptive to the evolving global economy and financial markets," he noted.     As the largest multilateral development institution, the World Bank should re-assess the challenges confronting the developing countries -- soaring food and fuel prices, higher financing costs, deteriorating balance of payments positions, and mounting inflationary pressures, said Yi Gang.     "With the advantages of its financing capacity and expertise, the World Bank should urge the developed countries to shoulder their due responsibilities in stabilizing the global economy through targeted measures, carried out in an even-handed and professional fashion," he said.     Yi Gang also stressed the fundamentals of the Chinese economy are "solid and resilient."     "We are confident we can weather the financial turmoil," he said. "With the global economic slowdown, it is important that China maintains its stable and relatively rapid growth." 

BUDAPEST, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Jia Qinglin, head of China's top political advisory body, on Thursday met with Hungary's parliament speaker and put forward a package of proposals for further expanding friendship and cooperation between China and Hungary.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), held talks with Szili Katalin, speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly in Budapest Thursday morning.     During the meeting, Jia suggested that the two countries should maintain high-level contact so as to deepen political trust. The two countries should also expand trade and economic cooperation in a bid to promote common development. China will continue to encourage well-established companies to invest in Hungary. BEIJING, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council, the country's Cabinet, issued an implementation regulation for Labor Contract Law here on Thursday in an effort to clarify confusion surrounding the law.     The new law, which was put into effect on Jan. 1, was hailed as a landmark step in protecting employee's rights. But many complained the law increased a company's operational cost as it overemphasized protection of workers.     One of the most debated terms was one that entitled employees of at least 10 years' standing to sign contracts without specific time limits. Some employers believed the "no-fixed-term contract" would bring a heavy burden to them and lower company vitality.     "By issuing the regulation, we hope to make it clear that labor contracts with no fixed termination dates did not amount to lifetime contracts," a Legislative Affairs Office of the State Council official told Xinhua.     The regulation listed 14 conditions under which an employer can terminate a labor contract. These included an employee's incompetence to live up to the job requirements, serious violations of regulations and dereliction of duty.     Another 13 circumstances were also included in the regulation, under which an employee could terminate his or her contract with an employer, including delayed pay and forced labor.     Compensation should be given if employers terminate the contract lawfully. Employers should double the amount of compensation if they terminated a contract at their own will. No further financial compensation was required, according to the regulation.     China's top legislative body, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, adopted the Labor Contract Law in June2007, which was followed by a string of staff-sacking scandals.     The best known was the "voluntary resignation" scheme by Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., the country's telecom network equipment giant.     The Guangdong Province-based company asked its staff who had worked for eight consecutive years to hand in "voluntary resignations." Staff would have to compete for their posts and sign new labor contracts with the firm once they were re-employed.     Huawei later agreed to suspend the controversial scheme after talks with the All China Federation of Trade Unions.     The NPC Standing Committee said on Thursday it would start a law enforcement inspection at the end of September in 15 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions.     The Legislative Affairs Office of the State Council issued a draft of the implementation regulation on May 8 to solicit public opinion. By May 20, the office had received 82,236 responses. On Sept. 3, the State Council approved the regulation.

BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- The parties involved in the Korean Peninsula nuclear talks held intense bilateral meetings here to pave the way for the discussions between chief negotiators, which are scheduled for Thursday afternoon. NAIROBI, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Armed Somali pirates hijacked Wednesday a Hong Kong bulk carrier with 25 crew members, 24 of them Chinese, off the Somali coast, the Chinese embassy in Nairob confirmed.     The bulk carrier owned by Sinotrans of Hong Kong was en route from Tunisia to Pipavav, India when it was hijacked off the eastern coast of Somalia, the 14th of such seizure by the pirates in the past two months, said Andrew Mwangura, an coordinator of the East Africa Seafarers Assistance Program (SAP).     Besides the 24 Chinese, a Sri Lankan captain was also on board the vessel that was captured, Mwangura told Xinhua by telephone.     The carrier was the second Hong Kong ship hijacked this week in the region. A Hong Kong-registered carrier was hijacked on Monday near the Somali coast with 22 crew on board. None of them were Chinese citizens.     Somalia's 3,300-kilometer coastline is considered by the International Maritime Bureau one of the world's most dangerous stretches of waters due to piracy as the Horn of Africa remains plagued by factional fighting since 1991.     Over 30 foreign ships have been captured by pirates near the Somali coast this year and more than 10 of them remain in the hands of pirates

BEIJING, May 11 -- China's monetary authorities are struggling to address conflicting policy goals, but inflation will remain the top policy concern, the country's central bank governor said on Saturday.     While the United States and other countries are more focused on fending off a recession, China's monetary policy must target inflation over growth and employment, Zhou Xiaochuan, the People's Bank of China governor, told a forum in Lujiazui, Shanghai's financial center.     "There is no cure-all medicine, and we have to make the final decisions -- everyone hopes there would be a cure-all solution, but there is not," said Zhou.     China's consumer price inflation would likely to rise to 8.5 percent in April from 8.3 percent in March, two sources familiar with the data said late on Thursday. The data, which is subject to last-minute revisions, will be officially released on Monday.
