China's natural gas output would at least double the present volume in the coming decade to reach 150 billion to 200 billion cubic meters, PetroChina Vice President Jia Chengzao said on Tuesday.     PetroChina, the country's leading natural gas producer, alone has reported an annual output rise of 10 billion cubic meters for two consecutive years, he said.     "We will strive to keep the same growth rate this year," said Jia, a member of the 11th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, who is attending the annual political advisory session.     His company produces about 75 percent of China's total natural gas output.     Recent discoveries of new gas fields, including Jidong Nanpu Oil Field in north China's Bohai Bay, which contains 1.18 billion tons of oil and gas reserves, would boost China's natural gas sector and optimize its energy structure, said Jia.     "China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) will probably announce the proven reserves of the Longgang gasfield in the southwestern Sichuan Province around the end of this year," he said.     Industry insiders believe the Longgang gasfield contains at least 700 billion cubic meters of estimated reserves.     China's natural gas output reached 69.31 billion cubic meters last year, up 23.1 percent year-on-year, according to China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association.     Listed in Hong Kong and New York, PetroChina Company Limited is the listing arm of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), the largest oil producer of China.

BEIJING - China welcomed Sudan's acceptance of a joint African Union- United Nations peacekeeping force for the country's troubled Darfur region. A Sudanese diplomat in Ethiopia confirmed on Wednesday that Sudan has accepted the mission after receiving assurances that a "hybrid" AU-UN force of 17,000 to 19,000 troops will not be open-ended and Sudan will remain in control of its borders. "China welcomes the deployment of a hybrid AU-UN force in Darfur and the joint statement," Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in a statement posted on the ministry's Web site late Wednesday. "The facts have shown that dialogue and equal negotiation is an effective approach to political solution of the Darfur issue, and the consultation between AU, UN and Sudan is an effective mechanism," Qin said. China recently appointed a special representative for Africa to focus on Darfur, and has publicly urged Khartoum to give the UN a greater role in trying to resolve the conflict. The Darfur conflict began in 2003 when local rebels took up arms against the Sudanese government, accusing it of decades of neglect. Sudanese leaders are accused of unleashing the pro-government Arab militia, the janjaweed, to fight them - a charge they deny.

CHANGSHA -- Central China's Hunan Province said it has taken effective measures to prevent epidemics after about 2 billion rats chomped their way through cropland around the Dongting Lake, the country's second largest freshwater lake. "It's not possible for rodent-borne diseases to break out in the lake area," said Chen Xiaochun, vice director of the provincial health department. Local health authorities have been watching closely over the rodent situation after the rats fled their flooded island homes and invaded 22 counties around the Dongting Lake last week, he told a press conference on Wednesday. Results of their observation are reported daily to the provincial health department and the public, he said. Meanwhile, local health and disease prevention and control authorities have intensified management of raticide and pesticide, for fear they might contaminate food and water, Chen added. No human infection of any rat-borne disease has been reported in the central Chinese province since 1944. The provincial government also ruled out widespread suspicions that rats flooded the area because one of their natural enemies -- snakes -- had been served at dinner tables. "The Dongting Lake area is not an ideal habitat for snakes," said Deng Sanlong, a top forestry official in the province, "and the only two species that inhabitate the region feed largely on fish and frogs." He said the top enemy of the rats are hawks that spend winter in the wetland around the lake but fly away in spring. China's Ministry of Agriculture and the Hunan provincial government have allocated 900,000 yuan in total to eradicate the rats.

FUZHOU - Seven people are missing after a fishing vessel collided with a cargo ship in the sea near Keelung Islet, Taiwan, in the early hours of Saturday, said an official with the Taiwan Affairs Office of East China's Fujian Province.A cargo ship, registered in Singapore, collided with a fishing boat, which was carrying 71 people - two from Taiwan and 69 from the mainland, said the official.All the fishermen plunged into the sea but 64 people were later rescued. The seven missing people were confirmed to be residents on the mainland.The rescue operation is ongoing.

A special assistance center was set up in Beijing Prison recently where policewomen, who are also qualified counselors, provide help for special "clients", male prisoners who are serving long sentences, Beijing Youth News reported on July 5. One is in a critical condition, while three others were also seriously hurt.Doctors have said they are expected to pull through, however.The local government has set up its rescue headquarters at the primary school in Xiangyang village. No casualties have been reported there, but there have been reports of severe damage to houses, vehicles and grain fields.The 100-m-long by more than 10-m-high dam was situated on a hillside. A crack more than 10 m long appeared in it and a river of waste ore and mud some 80 m wide spilled down across cropland.With a capacity of 150,000 cu m, the dam, which belongs to the Dingyang Mining Co Ltd, an iron ore producer, was designed to contain waste ore. GUANGZHOU: The Guangdong People's Procuratorate on Thursday called on the public to continue to help it identify and prosecute government officials found to be guilty of dereliction of duty. Figures show that of the 2,200 such cases reported by the public since 2005, 738 people in 678 cases were subsequently prosecuted. Of those, 65 were county-level officials, with five holding more senior positions. Since the beginning of 2006, the procuratorate has rewarded 23 people for providing information on such cases, Huang Liming, director of the anti-dereliction of duty division of the provincial procuratorate, said. Also on Thursday, the provincial disciplinary watchdog disclosed details of four its most serious cases. In one, two police officials in Huazhou, Guangdong, were charged with torturing to death Huang Weiqing in November 2002, who had earlier been arrested for being a grifter. A court heard how police officer Huang Weiguang, who had been drinking alcohol prior to interrogating the suspect, repeatedly beat the man about the head, chest, back and legs until he lost consciousness, in a bid to extract a confession. Huang Weiqing later died of his injuries on November 14. A second police officer, Li Hanyu, was found guilty of failing to intervene; he instead simply left the room. Almost 40 police officers from the station unanimously testified that the suspect had killed himself by hitting his head on a table while being questioned. However, the dead man's family continued to appeal to government departments for justice. The provincial procuratorate eventually set up a special team and after a two-month investigation reached its decision on the police officers involved. Huang was sentenced to life imprisonment, while Li got two years for dereliction of duty. A number of other police officers were also punished. In another case, Fu Zuoqing, the former president of the Qingyuan Intermediate People's Court, received 11 years' imprisonment for misuse of power, bribery and embezzlement.
