BEIJING, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- With the Beijing Paralympic Games under way, Chinese President Hu Jintao and other top leaders watched a musical and dancing performance staged by disabled artists in Beijing on Thursday night.     The grand show, titled "My Dream," was presented by the China Disabled People's Performing Art Troupe (CDPPAT) in the Poly Theatre in downtown Beijing. Specially prepared for the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics, the show has been continuously modified and Thursday's was already its fifth edition.     Sitting among the audience were Party and state leaders Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang, as well as International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Philip Craven and International Olympic Committee Honorary President Juan Antonio Samaranch. Chinese President Hu Jintao greets artists of China Disabled People's Performing Art Troupe after their performance "My Dream" at the Poly Theatre in Beijing Sept. 11, 2008The performance -- a mixture of music, dancing, Peking Opera, dancing drama and music drama -- has been a hit since its debut on Aug. 10, staged for more than 40 times in the Chinese capital.     The performance on Thursday night began with a poem titled "My Dream," which was presented by performers using the sign language.     "We are trying to hear sounds and rhythms in silence, to see light in darkness, and to pursue perfection with disabilities," the poem goes.     In a classical repertoire of the troupe called the Thousand-hand Bodhisattva, Tai Lihua, a deaf dancer with great popularity in China, led 20 other hearing-impaired dancers in golden costumes to perform in breath-taking synchronicity. SINGAPORE, July 23 (Xinhua) -- The first informal meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Six-Party Talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue concluded here on Wednesday with "very meaningful results", Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said.     In a news briefing after the close-door talks on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Ministerial Meeting, Yang said that the Six-Party Talks have "very meaningful results", adding that they exchanged views and deepened understanding and expressed the will of continued pushing forward the Six-Party Talks further.     Yang said, "with joint efforts, the six parties agreed that the initial success has been achieved" and the informal talks "made useful preparation for the formal Six-Party Ministerial Talks in early day".     The Chinese foreign minister said the six parties reaffirmed they will earnestly fulfill their commitment to the signed joint statements and related documents.     Yang said all agreed the Six-Party Talks are an important platform for exchanging views and enhancing understanding, adding that the six parties should continue to enhance their exchanges so as to "achieve mutual benefit and win-win progress". Chief delegates of the six-party talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue ended talks on July 12, agreeing to establish a verification mechanism for denuclearization.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official said on Monday that China will continue to cooperate with other countries to cope with the current financial crisis.     "For the international community, the most urgent task is to join efforts to stem further deterioration and spread of the crisis -- the major threat to global growth -- and restore global economic and financial stability," said Yi Gang, vice governor of the People's Bank of China     "China will continue to strengthen its cooperation with concerned countries and hopes that all governments will work together to overcome the current difficulties and restore international financial stability," he said in a statement at the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank.     He urged the two Bretton Woods Institutions to "fulfill their mandates to maintain global monetary and financial stability and facilitate sustainable, balanced growth."     The fund should give the surveillance priority to the ongoing financial turmoil, deepen its analysis, learn lessons, and listen to the opinions of member countries, said the senior official of China's central bank.     "From the medium- and long-term perspective, the fund must address the inherent deficiencies of the current international monetary system and foster an international financial architecture adaptive to the evolving global economy and financial markets," he noted.     As the largest multilateral development institution, the World Bank should re-assess the challenges confronting the developing countries -- soaring food and fuel prices, higher financing costs, deteriorating balance of payments positions, and mounting inflationary pressures, said Yi Gang.     "With the advantages of its financing capacity and expertise, the World Bank should urge the developed countries to shoulder their due responsibilities in stabilizing the global economy through targeted measures, carried out in an even-handed and professional fashion," he said.     Yi Gang also stressed the fundamentals of the Chinese economy are "solid and resilient."     "We are confident we can weather the financial turmoil," he said. "With the global economic slowdown, it is important that China maintains its stable and relatively rapid growth."

SEOUL, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- China and the Republic of Korea (ROK) issued a joint communique here Monday, vowing to cement bilateral relations.     The two countries pledged to broaden and enhance cooperation, and intensify coordination on regional and international issues so as to achieve long-term common development while contributing to world peace and prosperity, according to the joint communique issued during President Hu Jintao's state visit to the ROK.     The two sides agreed to promote the strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries in a comprehensive way.     The two heads of state expressed their satisfaction over the development of bilateral ties in various fields including politics, economy and culture since China and the ROK established diplomatic relations in 1992. He last visited the country in November 2005.

TOKYO, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda met on Thursday with 10 representatives of Chinese students studying in Japan, delivering friendly messages before the upcoming visit of Chinese President Hu Jintao to Japan.     "We warmly welcome President Hu to Japan," said Fukuda in the talks with the Chinese students at his residence.     He said that despite some problems in bilateral ties, he hoped that the Chinese students will, under whatever circumstances, recognize the importance of Japan-China relations and strive for their development.     China is a major power in the world, and the performance of a major power has direct bearing on world stability, said the Japanese prime minister, adding that Japan hopes to foster a relationship with China that helps make joint efforts for world stability. BEIJING, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- China's chief quality supervisor Li Changjiang stepped down Monday afternoon with the approval of the State Council after tainted dairy products sickened tens of thousands of infants and killed three.     Wang Yong, former deputy secretary-general of the State Council, replaced him as the director of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ).     Li was the highest ranking official brought down so far by the dairy product contamination scandal.     Across the country, about 13,000 babies remain in hospital after falling ill from melamine-tainted milk powder, and nearly 40,000 others were also sickened but had been cured, according to the Ministry of Health on Sunday.     Wu Xianguo, the Communist Party chief of Shijiazhuang City, the epicenter of the national dairy industry tremor in northern Hebei Province, was also sacked on Monday.     Before Wu, Mayor Ji Chuntang and Vice Mayor Zhang Fawang as well as three other responsible city officials were sacked after locally-based Sanlu Group became the first dairy producer under the spotlight in the scandal.     The latest government personnel reshuffle, together with the resignation of Shanxi governor Meng Xuenong following a deadly landslide triggered by the collapse of an illegal mining dump, sent a strong signal of the central government's resolution to hold relevant officials accountable for severe production and quality incidents, said professor Wang Wei of the National School of Administration.     "Such a system is especially crucial to the building of a service-oriented government as the public, impressed with the Olympic efficiency of the governments at various levels, expect officials to retain quick-response and effective," Wang said.     Under the Civil Servants Law effective as of 2005 and the State Council Regulations on the Punishment of Civil Servants of Administrative Organs enacted last April, heads of administrative organs who fail to fulfill their duties and cause avoidable severe accidents will face removal and severer punishment.     A State Council decision released on Monday defined the Sanlu milk powder issue as a "sever food safety incident".     Wu, who doubled as member of the Standing Committee of the Hebei Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, was removed for delaying the reporting of the issue to higher authorities and incompetence in the disposition.     Li resigned taking the blame for supervision default.     Professor Wang found Li's resignation "no wonder". "With tightened and more efficient supervision, pathogenic dairy products would find no way to get out of the production lines," he said.     A combined result from purposeful cover-up of the producer and supervision default, the contamination scandal didn't emerge until Autumn.     Wang Yuanping from Taishun City of Zhejiang reportedly lodged a complaint to Sanlu in May, suspecting that his 13-year-old daughter developed kidney stone after drinking its milk powder.

PYONGYANG, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Tuesday made a five-point proposal to strengthen bilateral ties and cooperation with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).     Xi, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the proposal while meeting with Yang Hyong Sop, vice president of the Presidium of DPRK's Supreme People's Assembly.     Firstly, Xi proposed maintaining the trend of mutual exchange of visits by high ranking officials, and strengthening political communication and close relations between the Chinese Communist Party and the Worker's Party of Korea.     China will continue to exchange views on governance and party construction with the DPRK, maintaining communication on important issues, he said. BEIJING  -- The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) is forecasting an 8 percent increase in the country's Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the first quarter of 2008. The official government figures come out in mid-April.The bank said in a report issued on Thursday that the CPI would hit 8.2 percent in March, slightly down from the previous month as the effects from the snow chaos that hit China earlier this year died away.Inflation in China took its biggest jump in nearly 12 years in February when it rose 8.7 percent compared to the same period a year earlier. Food prices surged 23.3 percent while non-food prices edged up 1.6 percent from the year earlier period.Inflation was mainly fueled by rising food and energy prices in the global market, and compounded by domestic factors that included increased costs and a strong demand, the report said.The new round of global grain price rises, including rice and wheat, might add more pressure to the government's anti-inflation efforts.However, the inflation index would start decelerating in the second half of 2008 as the government's macro controls took effect. The continued global slowdown also weighed on demand and could gradually pull down prices, the report said.China rolled out a series of measures to fight inflation after the government was reshuffled last month. Among the latest moves was an increase in farm subsidies to boost production and curb grain price hikes.
