KIEV, Sept 19 (Xinhua) -- The Seventh Euro-China Forum ended Friday in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, as participants called for further dialogue and cooperation between China and Europe.     In the three-day forum entitled "Silk Road of the 21st century," nearly 200 politicians, academicians, economists from Europe and Asia discussed Sino-Europe relations and economic cooperation.     Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko said China has made great achievements in its economic development and "Ukraine is willing to learn China's successful experiences and strengthen exchanges and cooperation with China."     China has just successfully hosted the 2008 Olympic Games and its scale and level was impressive, the president said in a message to the forum.     Addressing the forum, former French Prime Minister Laurent Fabius said that apart from economic cooperation, the Europeans and Chinese should enhance their cultural exchanges to know each other even better.     "The economic and trade relations is the core of the Europe- China cooperation. And its influence keeps growing." he said.     Fabius also noted that Europe in the past called China "a sleeping giant" and the giant is now waking up.     "The success of the Beijing Olympic Games showed China's vigor and enthusiasm," he said.     Chinese ambassador to Ukraine Zhou Li said that Ukraine is an important country in Europe and the Chinese government attaches great importance to developing relations with Ukraine and Europe.     The bilateral economic and trade relations between China and Ukraine have developed steadily in recent years, he said.     "I believe the friendly cooperative relations between China and Ukraine will see a more brilliant future thanks to bilateral joint efforts," Zhou Li said.     The non-governmental forum was initiated by China Europe International Business School to foster unofficial exchanges between the two sides of the Eurasian continent. The forum was first held in 2002 in Barcelona, Spain.

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has clarified China's policies of continuing reform and opening-up and seeking peaceful and common development during his just-concluded visit to the UN headquarters, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Thursday.     During his 48-hour stay in New York, Wen attended the UN high-level meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the 63rd annual general debate of the UN General Assembly.     Wen's visit was particularly significant in view of the increasingly complex international situation, the recent turbulence in the international economic and financial sectors, the sharp increases in oil prices and food supply shortage, and the whole world is keen to know in what direction China is heading after the Beijing Olympic Games, Yang told Xinhua. BEIJING, May 11 -- China's monetary authorities are struggling to address conflicting policy goals, but inflation will remain the top policy concern, the country's central bank governor said on Saturday.     While the United States and other countries are more focused on fending off a recession, China's monetary policy must target inflation over growth and employment, Zhou Xiaochuan, the People's Bank of China governor, told a forum in Lujiazui, Shanghai's financial center.     "There is no cure-all medicine, and we have to make the final decisions -- everyone hopes there would be a cure-all solution, but there is not," said Zhou.     China's consumer price inflation would likely to rise to 8.5 percent in April from 8.3 percent in March, two sources familiar with the data said late on Thursday. The data, which is subject to last-minute revisions, will be officially released on Monday. BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- China will give more efforts to strengthen quality supervision of dairy products in rural areas, said Chen Deming, the minister of commerce, on Wednesday.     "The Ministry of Commerce (MOC) always gives food product supervision in vast rural areas a priority, although it is not an easy job to carry out as in urban areas," said Chen.     Chen said the MOC has urged local authorities to take tangible measures to regulate and stabilize the dairy markets in such areas.     The local governments were asked to launch strict supervision and inspection over dairy products in rural shops, enterprises and wholesale markets. Tainted milk products should be removed from shelves in time.     "The MOC will continue to work together with local governmental organs to ensure a sound market order, and help farmers get more knowledge about dairy products," said Chen.     Meanwhile, Chen noted the country should adopt concrete measures to lift consumer's confidence. "The government should enhance inspection over product quality, while enterprises should take on more social responsibility."     China's food quality has been criticized recently, as 13,000 infants nationwide were hospitalized with kidney problems and at least three were killed after drinking baby formula tainted with melamine. The chemical, which was added illegally, makes the protein content of milk appear higher than it actually is.     After the Sanlu formula's problem exposure, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine conducted a nationwide examination of baby milk powder to find 22 companies whose formulas were tainted.

BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's securities supervisor said on Friday that the heavy slump on the country's equities market was caused by a combination of factors, both domestic and foreign.     These included a need for internal correction, increasing uncertainties on the global markets and frequent natural disasters, China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) spokesman said at a press conference.     The unsound mechanism and structure of the country's equities market worsened the situation and widened the range of the correction, he said.     The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index edged up 0.56 percent to 2,450.61 points on Friday, closing out the week slightly higher after five days of losses. The key index has tumbled nearly 60 percent from its peak in October.     However, the trend of a steady and healthy performance would remain unchanged, he said, as the country's economy maintained steady and fast growth.     CSRC would study the emerging problems, promote the improvement of basic systems and optimize the structure of fund raising, he said.     CSRC would also adjust new share supply in line with market demand, enhancing the market mechanism in regulation.     The commission has slowed new share issues this year in an effort to brake the steep index declines as any mention of new share offering would cause a sharp plunge in the index.     From January to July, CSRC only approved the new offering (at least 100 million shares) of four companies, which raised a combined 64.32 billion yuan (9.38 billion U.S. dollars). BEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- The 6.1-magnitude quake that jolted southwest China's Sichuan and Yunnan provinces on Saturday has killed 32 people, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.     Sichuan reported 27 deaths and the other five were in Yunnan, the ministry said Sunday night.     The quake that occurred at 4:30 p.m Saturday also injured more than 400 people.     The epicenter was at the juncture of Renhe District in Panzhihua and Huili County in Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Liangshan, Sichuan. It was at a depth of 10 km, the China Earthquake Administration said.     QUAKE IMPACT AND DAMAGE     Areas affected by the quake were Panzhihua and Huili, both in Sichuan, and Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Chuxiong, Bai Autonomous Prefecture of Dali, Lijiang and Zhaotong cities, all in Yunnan Province. Kunming, the Yunnan capital, was also hit.     Most of the fatalities, however, were in Huili, Chuxiong and Panzhihua. All the three areas are on the southern end of the fault line of the May 12 quake that left more than 69,000 people dead and nearly 18,000 missing.     Another 6.0-plus magnitude quake, however, was not expected in the area in the next two weeks, said Liu Jie, chief forecaster of the Beijing-based Chinese Seismographic Information Center, on Saturday.     More than 300 aftershocks were also monitored in the quake zone as of 5 a.m. on Sunday, according to the national earthquake networks.     The networks monitored an aftershock of 5.6 magnitude in the same area of Saturday's quake at 4:31 p.m. on Sunday. In addition, more than 32,000 people were displaced.     In total, 38,425 residences suffered damage in the quake, of which 363 homes were toppled. Seven reservoirs, 22 highways and three bridges were also damaged.     The Panzhihua education authority said cracks were found on the buildings of more than 100 schools, of which 66 were in Renhe, a hard-hit district in the city.     "I am afraid these schools will not open for the new semester starting on Monday," said Shen Zhiqiang, an official with the Panzhihua City bureau of education.     "The figure (of schools affected by the quake) might go up, as damages in some primary schools based in remote mountainous villages were not reported yet due to inconvenient transport conditions," Shen said.     Further south, 600,000 people in five regions of Yunnan were affected by the quake. This included five deaths, more than 170 injured people and the destruction of 130,00 residences, said a Yunnan Provincial Bureau of Civil Affairs source.     The worst hit was Chuxiong where the five deaths were recorded. Destroyed were 111,448 homes, 656 school buildings and 213 buildings totaling 65,554 square meters of floor space. The direct economic loss was put at 500 million yuan (about 73 million U.S. dollars), according to the office for the quake control and relief headquarters of Chuxiong.     RELIEF OPERATION     On Saturday, China Earthquake Administration launched a level-three emergency response and dispatched an on-site working team to offer assistance after the quake struck.     In addition, the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs began a level-four emergency response mechanism at 5 p.m.. The civil affairs departments in Panzhihua and Yunnan began a class-three emergency response to cope with the aftermath of the quake.     Panzhihua government officials rushed to the quake zone to direct relief efforts. Relief materials, including water, food and300 tents, as well as emergency financial aid of 5 million yuan, were sent to the quake-affected areas.     More than 2,000 people in Huili were mobilized to join the relief operation that was hampered by heavy rain late on Saturday and early Sunday.     In total, 1,200 tents, together with about 10 tons of food and water were sent to quake zones in Huili, according to Huang Ling, the Huili County Government deputy chief.     On Sunday, Sichuan Provincial Weather Observatory issued a forecast saying the weather in the coming week would be overcast with showers or thunder showers, making the relief effort difficult.     The Yunnan Provincial Bureau of Civil Affairs said it had already sent relief materials including 3,200 tents, 1,000 cotton-padded quilts and 25 tons of rice to quake zones in the province.
