WASHINGTON, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Deputy Governor of the People's Bank of China Yi Gang called for international cooperation here on Saturday to restore global financial stability.     "Our current priority is to enhance international cooperation to prevent further deterioration and spillover of the crisis and restore global economic and financial stability," Yi said.     The deepening and widening of the U.S. financial crisis have triggered a major global slowdown and escalating uncertainty, Yi Gang said in a statement at the 18th meeting of the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC) held here Saturday.     While the advanced economies have slowed significantly since the U.S. sub-prime crisis, the emerging market economies have maintained robust growth but the deteriorating external environment is putting the resilience of their macroeconomic policies to the test, he said.     The crisis has underscored shortcomings in the financial markets, Yi said. He expressed his hope that the stabilizing measures of the advanced economies will have the positive effect of calming the markets and restoring confidence.     "China is willing to strengthen its cooperation with other countries and, through such joint efforts, we hope global financial stability can be safeguarded," he said.     In line with their status, Yi said, the major reserve currency issuing countries should shoulder the responsibility for preventing further spillovers and minimizing shocks to other economies -- especially to the emerging markets.     To promote balanced and steady global growth over the longer term, efforts should be made to advance structural reforms and increase savings, he pointed out.     The International Monetary Fund -- at the core of the international monetary system -- should carry out its mandate to safeguard global economic and financial stability, he said. The IMFC is the steering committee of the 185-nation lending institution.     Yi also noted that as the impact of the crisis on the real economy is much worse than expected and the recovery more protracted and difficult, the risks of deflation in some countries as a result of the credit crunch have increased significantly.     "It is imperative that the major advanced economies coordinate rapid implementation of bailout packages to avoid deflation and facilitate the global recovery," said Yi.     "However, we should be aware that the injection of liquidity from these emergency measures could be a potential source of inflation in the medium and long term," the deputy governor said.

BEIJING, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a major earthquake in southwest China's Sichuan Province has climbed to 9,219, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said here Tuesday morning.     The 7.8-magnitude quake has killed 9,219 people in eight affected provinces and municipality of Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi, Yunnan, Shanxi, Guizhou, Hubei and Chongqing, the ministry said in a release issued at 7 a.m.. The Level I emergency plan covers the most serious class of natural disasters.     A disaster relief work group of the State Council, China's Cabinet, rushed to the quake-hit county of Wenchuan on Monday evening to coordinate the rescue and relief work.     Meanwhile, the ministry said strong winds and hailstorms lashed Hubei, Hebei and Jiangsu provinces from Sunday evening to early Monday morning, affecting more than 630,000 people.     In central China's Hubei Province, the hailstorms attacked 10 counties, affecting 515,000 people, collapsing 85 rooms of 33 households and damaging another 4,761 rooms as of 11 a.m. Monday. The direct economic loss was estimated at 385 million yuan (55 million U.S. dollars).     Hailstorms also lashed three counties of north China's Hebei Province on Sunday, affecting 92,100 locals and resulting in a direct economic loss of 7.65 million yuan.     In east China's Jiangsu Province, 24,000 people also suffered from strong winds and hails Sunday evening. Let's believe no difficulty will stop us once we join hands," he said.     Wu thanked doctors and nurses at the hospital for working day and night to save lives.     He then went to the Chengdu Railway Station, which has become an important distribution center of relief materials from home and abroad.     Wu talked with volunteers working at the station. "Coming from every corner of the country, you are an important force in the quake relief efforts. I hope relief materials could be delivered to thousands of needy people through your hard work."

BEIJING, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Li Keqiang has urged officials and workers at the section of the Three Gorges in southwest China to ensure safety and quality for the project as the flood season draws near.     The member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China Central Committee Political Bureau made the remark at a meeting here on Thursday by the Office of the State Council Three Gorges Project Construction Committee.     The Three Gorges Dam started discharging water earlier this month to lower the water level in the reservoir after excessive rainfall upstream. The discharge would continue as more heavy rain was expected on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. Related organizations should see to their basic life requirements and employment by fulfilling policies on supporting migrants and training them for professional skills.     The world's largest dam, 2,309 meters long and 185 meters high, is expected to help minimize damage caused by floods that might occur only once every 1,000 years.     In addition, Li urged to build an ecological protection area around the dam to prevent water pollution, soil loss and mud-sand silting. He said the section of the Three Gorges Dam should be built as an ecological barrier for the Yangtze.     The 22.5 billion U.S. dollar project was launched in 1993. Its 26 turbo-generators is designed to produce 85 billion kwh of electricity annually after their installation is completed at yearend.     According to the office, more than 1.24 million people had been relocated and the project was going smoothly in terms of the local economic society development, environment construction and geologic disaster prevention.

BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday paid a morale-boosting visit to the country's Paralympic athletes, urging them to "strive to become strong and fight for the best."     With 16 days to go until the opening ceremony in Beijing, Hu, accompanied by Vice President Xi Jinping, went to the training center for Paralympic athletes in a northeastern suburb of the capital in the morning.
