BEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- The 6.1-magnitude quake that jolted southwest China's Sichuan and Yunnan provinces on Saturday has killed 32 people, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.     Sichuan reported 27 deaths and the other five were in Yunnan, the ministry said Sunday night.     The quake that occurred at 4:30 p.m Saturday also injured more than 400 people.     The epicenter was at the juncture of Renhe District in Panzhihua and Huili County in Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Liangshan, Sichuan. It was at a depth of 10 km, the China Earthquake Administration said.     QUAKE IMPACT AND DAMAGE     Areas affected by the quake were Panzhihua and Huili, both in Sichuan, and Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Chuxiong, Bai Autonomous Prefecture of Dali, Lijiang and Zhaotong cities, all in Yunnan Province. Kunming, the Yunnan capital, was also hit.     Most of the fatalities, however, were in Huili, Chuxiong and Panzhihua. All the three areas are on the southern end of the fault line of the May 12 quake that left more than 69,000 people dead and nearly 18,000 missing.     Another 6.0-plus magnitude quake, however, was not expected in the area in the next two weeks, said Liu Jie, chief forecaster of the Beijing-based Chinese Seismographic Information Center, on Saturday.     More than 300 aftershocks were also monitored in the quake zone as of 5 a.m. on Sunday, according to the national earthquake networks.     The networks monitored an aftershock of 5.6 magnitude in the same area of Saturday's quake at 4:31 p.m. on Sunday. An aftershock of 5.6 magnitude hit the juncture area of Renhe District in Panzhihua City and Huili County in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture on Sunday afternoon, one day after the 6.1 magnitude quake hitting the same area. The death toll of Saturday's quake has risen to 28, while no damage caused by the aftershock has been reported    Panzhihua City Quake Control and Relief Headquarters on Sunday confirmed more than 70,000 people in the city were affected by the quake. In addition, more than 32,000 people were displaced.     In total, 38,425 residences suffered damage in the quake, of which 363 homes were toppled. Seven reservoirs, 22 highways and three bridges were also damaged.     The Panzhihua education authority said cracks were found on the buildings of more than 100 schools, of which 66 were in Renhe, a hard-hit district in the city.     "I am afraid these schools will not open for the new semester starting on Monday," said Shen Zhiqiang, an official with the Panzhihua City bureau of education.     "The figure (of schools affected by the quake) might go up, as damages in some primary schools based in remote mountainous villages were not reported yet due to inconvenient transport conditions," Shen said.     Further south, 600,000 people in five regions of Yunnan were affected by the quake. This included five deaths, more than 170 injured people and the destruction of 130,00 residences, said a Yunnan Provincial Bureau of Civil Affairs source.     The worst hit was Chuxiong where the five deaths were recorded. Destroyed were 111,448 homes, 656 school buildings and 213 buildings totaling 65,554 square meters of floor space. The direct economic loss was put at 500 million yuan (about 73 million U.S. dollars), according to the office for the quake control and relief headquarters of Chuxiong.     RELIEF OPERATION     On Saturday, China Earthquake Administration launched a level-three emergency response and dispatched an on-site working team to offer assistance after the quake struck.     In addition, the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs began a level-four emergency response mechanism at 5 p.m.. The civil affairs departments in Panzhihua and Yunnan began a class-three emergency response to cope with the aftermath of the quake.     Panzhihua government officials rushed to the quake zone to direct relief efforts. Relief materials, including water, food and300 tents, as well as emergency financial aid of 5 million yuan, were sent to the quake-affected areas.     More than 2,000 people in Huili were mobilized to join the relief operation that was hampered by heavy rain late on Saturday and early Sunday.     In total, 1,200 tents, together with about 10 tons of food and water were sent to quake zones in Huili, according to Huang Ling, the Huili County Government deputy chief.     On Sunday, Sichuan Provincial Weather Observatory issued a forecast saying the weather in the coming week would be overcast with showers or thunder showers, making the relief effort difficult.     The Yunnan Provincial Bureau of Civil Affairs said it had already sent relief materials including 3,200 tents, 1,000 cotton-padded quilts and 25 tons of rice to quake zones in the province. Chuxiong Prefecture had also allocated 350,000 yuan for disaster relief.     The Jet Li One Foundation, initiated by Chinese film star Jet Li, earmarked 2.5 million yuan and donated materials worth 250,000 yuan on Sunday to the affected areas in the two provinces.     RESUMPTION OF DISRUPTED SERVICES     Traffic on the north-south rail line from Chengdu, the Sichuan capital, to Kunming, which runs all the way through the quake zone, was disrupted temporarily on Saturday and resumed on Sunday.     Some stops on the 1,100 km rail line were damaged, which led to the cancellation of three freight trains, a Kunming Railways Administration source said.     "Resumption of this railway service will guarantee the delivery of relief materials to the quake zone centered on Panzhihua," saida Kunming Railways Administration official.

BEIJING, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese equities tumbled on Friday following a heavy slump overnight on Wall Street as concerns about the U.S. economic slump worsened.     The Shanghai Composite Index sank 3.29 percent, or 74.97 points, to 2,202.45. The key index has declined more than 58 percent this year and more than 63 percent from its peak in October.     In Shenzhen, the market fell 2.8 percent, or 209.4 points, to 7,264.2. Aggregate turnover expanded to 42.55 billion yuan (6.22 billion U.S. dollars) from 38.99 billion yuan on the previous trading day.     Losses outnumbered gains by 827-47 in Shanghai and 702-32 in Shenzhen.     Wall Street fell on Thursday with the Dow Jones down more than 340 points as disappointing jobless and retail data left investors doubtful of a U.S. economy recovery. The downturn partly contributed to a fall in China equities, analysts said.     Tracking the Wall Street loss, both the Hong Kong and Tokyo exchanges plunged more than 2 percent on Friday. The mark was the peak of the market's last bullish period that ended in 2001.     The breach increased market panic and the weak sentiment would remain until the authority could come up with detailed market-boosting measures instead of just vague market talks, a Shanghai Shiji Investment Consultant Company analyst said.     Continuous retreats in the world crude oil price and other commodities heightened worries that a global slowdown would cut demand and would dent corporate profits, analysts said.     Crude oil for October delivery dropped 1.46 U.S. dollars overnight to 107.89 U.S. dollars per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, falling for a fifth straight day to a five-month low.     In response, China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC), the country's largest offshore oil explorer, fell 4.24 percent to 13.76 yuan. China Shenhua, the country's top coal producer, shed 3.16 percent to 24.54 yuan and Yanzhou Coal Mining Company lost 4.29 percent to 12.71 yuan.     Investor confidence was also dampened by news of China Merchants Securities plan to launch an initial public offering (IPO), Guosen Securities senior analyst Tang Xiaosheng said.     Brokerage shares declined across the board. CITIC Securities sank 3.18 percent to 18.56 yuan, Guojin Securities slumped 7.3 percent to 27.94 yuan, while Hongyuan Securities lost 4.79 percent to 13.92 yuan.     China Merchants Securities Co. Ltd. said in a prospectus released late on Thursday that it planned to issue 358.55 million A-shares on the Shanghai bourse. The application would be decided by market regulators on Monday.     If approved, it would become the second domestic brokerage IPO following Everbright Securities after a five-year suspension.

BEIJING, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao held talks with Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt here Monday. Both agreed to deepen cooperation.     During their talks, Wen said as the first western country to establish diplomatic ties with the People's Republic of China 58 years ago, Sweden and China have continued to increase mutual trust and understanding, as well as expand cooperation in all areas.     The recent years, in particular, have seen rapid growth in bilateral trade volume, said Wen, noting that China has become the largest trade partner for Sweden in Asia. DUSHANBE, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Leaders attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in the Tajik capital issued a joint declaration Thursday on security, energy and several other issues.     The declaration was signed by Chinese President Hu Jintao, his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon and his Uzbek counterpart Islam Karimov.     ON USE OF FORCE     The leaders agreed that any attempt to solve problems by merely resorting to force could not work and would only hinder a comprehensive settlement of local conflicts, the declaration said.     A comprehensive solution to existing problems can be found only by taking into account the interests of all parties involved and including them all in the negotiation process rather than isolating any of them, said the declaration.     Any attempt to strengthen a country's own security at the expense of that of others is detrimental to maintaining global security and stability, it said.     On the issue of South Ossetia, the SCO members expressed their deep concerns over the tension triggered by the South Ossetia conflict, and called on relevant parties to solve existing problems peacefully through dialogue, strive for reconciliation and push for negotiations. BEIJING, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and other senior leaders took part in a voluntary tree planting activity at the Olympic Forest Park here on Saturday.     China's top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao, top political advisor Jia Qinglin, as well as Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang, and Zhou Yongkang also planted trees at the park next to the national stadium, the main venue of the Beijing Olympic Games.     Covering some 680 hectares in the north of Beijing, the park is a major part of the 2008 Olympics infrastructure, which is expected to improve the city's environment and air quality.     Hu said during the activity that the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics are approaching. "In the vast space, I felt proud of our motherland."      Hu congratulated the astronauts on the successful feat and encouraged them to carry on efforts to fulfill the mission.     "The thing I most want to know is how are you feeling now and how is your work going," Hu asked the trio.     "We feel well," said Zhai. "We conducted the space scientific tests as planned and the EVA went smoothly."     Hu hailed the spacewalk as a sign of the country's progress in space scientific technology.     "You have made outstanding contribution to our country's space project," said Hu. BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- China is ready to work together with the United States to forge ahead bilateral relations of constructive cooperation along the right track and in a sustained, healthy and stable manner, President Hu Jintao said here on Sunday.During a meeting with his U.S. counterpart George W. Bush at Zhongnanhai, compound of China's central authorities, in Beijing, China, Aug. 10, 2008.     China-U.S. relations have maintained a good momentum, and face opportunities for further development, Hu said.    The Chinese president cited frequent exchanges between the two countries at all levels, a better mechanism of dialogue and consultation in diverse areas, and fruitful consultation and coordination on major international and regional issues, such as the Korea Peninsula nuclear issue, the Iran nuclear issue and the Darfur issue.    Hu spoke highly of Bush's contribution in promoting bilateral relations, and said he was very pleased to meet Bush again.    "This is already the fourth visit you pay to our country, which has made you the U.S. president paying the most visits to China in the presidential terms," Hu told Bush.    "This has fully demonstrated the great importance Mr. President has attached to the development of Sino-U.S. relations," he said.    The inauguration of the new U.S. embassy in Beijing on Friday, which President Bush attended, and the inauguration of the Chinese embassy in Washington at the end of last month, signified the further advancement of the China-U.S. relations, said the Chinese president.    In response, Bush noted that bilateral relations with China are important, constructive and forthright, adding that the U.S. side will continue to work with China to build bilateral ties on a more solid foundation.    On the Taiwan issue, Hu reiterated China's stance against "Taiwan independence," and hoped the United States properly handles the issue to support the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.    "No matter what kind of changes take place in the cross-Strait relations, our stance of adhering to the one-China principle and opposing 'Taiwan independence' secessionist activities will never change, and cannot be changed," Hu said.    Under new circumstances, the Chinese government will continue to push for the peaceful development of the relations across the Taiwan Straits, and promote cross-Strait personnel, economic and cultural exchanges and cooperation, said the Chinese president, adding that China hopes to see Washington properly handle the Taiwan issue and support such peaceful development.    President Bush responded that the United States is glad to see the improvement of cross-Strait relations.    During the meeting, which was followed by a banquet, the U.S. president said that he enjoyed the conservation with Hu, and has had "memorable experience" every time he visited the country.    Describing the grand opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, which he attended on Friday night, as "spectacular," Bush congratulated China on the successful opening of the Games and said he has "fully enjoyed" the Games. He also thanked the Chinese side for its considerate arrangements of various activities for himself and his family during their stay in Beijing.    Having watched a swimming final on Sunday morning in which Michael Phelps clinched a men's 400m individual medley gold with a new world record, Bush said he is looking forward to watching the basketball match between China and the United States scheduled for Sunday night.    Hu congratulated Bush on the victory of Michael Phelps, whom he called "an excellent athlete of the United States," and expressed the belief that Phelps will "achieve more outstanding results" in the Olympic swimming competition.Chinese President Hu Jintao (R, front) shakes hands with U.S. President George W. We will keep contact with the U.S. side and inform you of the new developments," said the Chinese president.    Bush thanked China for how it has handled the situation of Todd Bachman and his family, and also thanked Hu for his expression of sympathy.    Todd and Barbara Bachman of Lakeville, Minneapolis, were attacked by a man with a knife while touring the 13th-century Drum Tower of Beijing on Saturday. Todd Bachman died from knife wounds while his wife suffered multiple stab wounds and was in critical but stable condition after an eight-hour surgery.    Police said that the assailant, 47-year-old Tang Yongming from Hangzhou of east China's Zhejiang Province, later killed himself by jumping off a 130-foot high balcony on the Drum Tower.    During the Sunday meeting, the two presidents also exchanged views on other issues, including the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue and the Iran nuclear issue.    They agreed that the two sides should maintain communication and coordination, and make joint efforts to facilitate the proper settlement of these issues.    Both leaders also made a positive evaluation of the progress achieved through the strategic and economic dialogue between the two countries, and agreed to work together to help the dialogue achieve more positive results.
