UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- Zhang Yesui, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, met with Susan Rice, the new U.S. ambassador to the world body, here on Monday afternoon, and they exchanged views on the Sino-U.S. relations and other world and regional issues of common concern, diplomatic sources said here Tuesday.     During the meeting, Rice briefed Zhang on the key points of the foreign policy of the Barack Obama administration, the sources said.     The two sides also exchanged views on the Sino-U.S. relations, and other international and regional issues of common concern. They agreed to strengthen their consultation on and cooperation in the affairs of the United Nations, the sources said.     The new U.S. ambassador made her UN debut on Monday by presenting her credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

BEIJING, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Agricultural Bank of China (ABC) on Thursday signed an agreement with Central Huijin Co., an investment arm of the government, for a 130-billion-yuan (19 billion U.S. dollars) capital injection in preparation for an eventual stock listing.     Xiang Junbo, the state-owned bank's president, said the injection would boost the bank's capital base, improve its financial status and enhance its profitability.     After the injection, Central Huijin and the Ministry of Finance each will have half of the bank's ownership.     Lou Jiwei, head of Central Huijin's board of directors, said the company would help ABC improve its corporate governance to make it a modern commercial bank with global competitiveness.     According to Xiang, ABC's profit grew 35 percent year-on-year to 98 billion yuan in the first three quarters. As of Sept. 30, deposits totaled 5.9 trillion yuan and loans 3.97 trillion yuan, rising by 690 billion yuan and 300 billion yuan, respectively, from a year earlier. VICTORIA, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- At the invitation of Seychellois President James Alix Michel and Speaker of the country's National Assembly Patrick Herminie, Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo arrived here Wednesday afternoon to begin an official visit to the country on the final leg of his five-nation African tour.     In a written statement released at the airport upon his arrival, Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, highlighted the rapid development of the China-Seychelles relations in the past 32 years since the two nations forged the diplomatic relations, noting that the bilateral cooperation between the two nations have brought concrete benefit to the two peoples. BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- China will adopt preferential fiscal and investment policies to boost economic development and trade in border areas, said the Ministry of Finance (MOF) on Thursday.     As of Nov. 1, residents who live in the border will be exempted from taxation of the daily necessities such as food and cloth costing in total no more than 8,000 yuan (1,171.3 U.S. dollars) per individual in one day.     Fiscal departments at all levels of government will allocate funds to support enterprises that engage in small-amount trade in border areas as of Nov. 1. But the MOF didn't reveal how much money would be allocated.     The amount of the fund is expected to increase every year, and no limitation was set on the period, said the MOF

BOSE, Guangxi, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's top lawmaker urged the southwest Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to build more transportation infrastructure and accept more industries from developed areas.     Guangxi should try to find a road for development compatible to its own realities, said Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), during his tour of the region which wraps up Wednesday.     Wu said the region should use the advantages it has such as low labor costs and natural resources to develop rural areas.     Wu, who is also member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, visited local villages, factories and schools to talk about rural reforms made at the recent Third Plenary Session of the Seventeenth CPC Central Committee.     He said the region should use its advantage of having a lengthy coastline and many sea ports, to make the Beibu Gulf Economic Zone the top recipient of development.     During his tour, Wu paid a visit to the Bose Memorial Hall, in Bose City. It was built to commemorate a 1929 uprising led by revolutionaries including Deng Xiaoping.     He laid a floral basket in front of the statues of Deng and his comrades. BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said the country's trade unions should play an active role in promoting coordinated labor relations on Tuesday.     Addressing a symposium attended by the newly-elected leaders of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) and representatives of the 15th national congress of the ACFTU, Hu said trade unions should listen to the employees and voice their opinions.     He called on trade unions to earnestly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of employees and coordinate labor relations to promote social stability.     He added that trade unions need reform and should explore new solutions to deal with problems. BEIJING, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- A compensation scheme for families of sickened and dead babies in the tainted milk powder scandal, which caused a food safety scare in China, is under review, a Health Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday.     The ministry is collecting medical records and checking statistics to make preparations for compensation, spokesman Mao Qun'an told reporters.     Mao said he "has not been authorized to release details" about the compensation plan but assured the media that relevant departments are working on it and will release the results after the plan is adopted.     Mao also said local governments paid a large amount of money for hospital ultrasound equipment and medication after more than 22 million children needed testing after drinking formula containing an industrial chemical known as melamine. That testing started in September.     Children who were confirmed to have developed kidney stones received free treatment.     The ministry said earlier it was likely six babies died from drinking toxic milk powder. Another 294,000 infants suffered from urinary problems such as kidney stones.     The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine publicized the names of 22 dairy companies which produced milk products containing melamine after milk powder produced by Sanlu Group was found to contain the banned chemical in mid September.

BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- China voiced its strong dissatisfaction and stern opposition to an award from the European Union (EU) to a Chinese criminal.     "We express strong dissatisfaction and stern opposition (to the award)," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in a written statement in response to the award on Thursday evening.     The European Parliament (EP), a supervisory and consultative organ of the EU, announced on Thursday it would select Hu for the Sakharov Prize.     On April 3, Hu was sentenced by the Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court to 3.5 years imprisonment, with one year's deprivation of political rights.     The verdict said Hu, an unemployed father aged 34 and the holder of a college degree, libeled the Chinese political and social systems, and instigated subversion of the state, which is a crime under Chinese law.     "Hu is a convicted criminal who is now in jail for subverting the state", Qin said, noting the award to Hu, in disguise of "protecting the human rights," is fabricating facts and confusing truth and has fully exposed its political attempt to interfere in China's internal affairs and infringe upon the country's judicial sovereignty.     "The fact has already proved and will continue to prove that such an act can neither change the fact of China's social development, nor deceive the European people," Qin said.
