MACAO, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Saturday that "one country, two systems" had been successfully implemented in both Hong Kong and Macao since their return to the motherland.     "The two special administrative regions have accumulated rich experience in the regard, and can learn from each other and make progress together," said the president when meeting with Donald Tsang, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) and principal officials of the Hong Kong SAR government.     Hu and Tsang arrived here Saturday to attend the celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland and the inauguration of the third-term government of the Macao SAR. BEIJING, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top political advisor Jia Qinglin attended a symposium here on Wednesday to mark the 60th anniversary of the uprising of two air carriers in Hong Kong in 1949.     On Nov. 9, 1949, a total of 12 aircraft from the carriers flew from Hong Kong to Beijing and Tianjin on the Chinese mainland during the uprising, a move embraced by the New China. Mao Zedong called it "a very patriotic action of great significance."     Du Qinglin, head of the United Front Work Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said the precious spirit of the uprising should be inherited and promoted, to encourage all the Chinese to make unswerving contributions to the rejuvenation of the nation.

HOHHOT, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- China has invested more than 6.5 billion yuan (959 million U.S. dollars) to preserve grasslands in northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, said the regional government.     The money has been spent on returning grazing land to grassland, restoration of natural grassland and sand source control to prevent sandstorm. The efforts have helped reduce the area of degraded grasslands in Inner Mongolia to 500 million mu (33.5 million hectares) from 700 mu since 2000, it said in a statement.     Since the end of the 1990s, successive droughts, overgrazing and inadequate funding on grassland protection have led to deterioration and desertification of the grasslands in the region.     The region has set the goal of increasing the grasslands' vegetation coverage to 42 percent next year and 48 percent in 2015.     The vast autonomous region, which has a grassland area of 1.3 billion mu, plays a key role in maintaining the country's ecological security, especially in preventing desert threat to Beijing and neighboring Tianjin.

BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- China on Saturday again expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, urging the U.S. to respect China's core interests and withdraw related arms sales plan.     "The U.S. arms sales to Taiwan infringe upon China's security interest as well as peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and interfere with China's internal affairs," said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu in a statement.     Jiang made the comments in response to a reporter's question on U.S. government approval for Raytheon Company to sell 1.1 billion U.S. dollars of Patriot antimissile system to Taiwan.     "We have raised solemn representations to the U.S. side," said Jiang. "We urge the U.S. to stop arms sales to Taiwan to avoid undermining China-U.S. cooperation."     Jiang said, "We urge the U.S. to clearly recognize the severe consequences of arms sales to Taiwan, reject the cold war mentality, and adhere to the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques, especially the principles established in the Joint Communique on Aug. 17, 1982."     The "Aug. 17 communique" stated that the U.S. would not seek to carry out a long-term policy of arms sales to Taiwan, and intended to gradually reduce arms sales.     "We also persuade the Raytheon Company to stop pushing or participating in arms sales to Taiwan, and refrain from doing anything that harms China's sovereignty and security interest," Jiang said.

BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese diplomat told reporters Wednesday a substantial content is more important than the title of the outcome of the forthcoming climate talks in Copenhagen, Denmark.     The key to success of the conference is to uphold the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Kyoto Protocol, the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities" and the Bali Road Map, said Yu Qingtai, special representative of the Foreign Ministry for the UN climate change talks.     "No matter what the title of the conference outcome will be, we must follow the principles of the UNFCCC and the Bali Road Map," Yu said.     He said China's determination in coping with climate change has never wavered and it has never relaxed efforts in this regard though the global financial crisis has posed a severe challenge for the country's economic growth.     However, it is unfair to make developing countries shoulder the same responsibilities as rich countries on emission reduction, Yu said.     "The principle of 'common but differentiated responsibilities' is the foundation for international cooperation, and denial of the principle undermines the basis for international partnership," Yu said.     "Common but differentiated responsibilities" was set up in the UNFCCC, which was signed by more than 150 countries in 1992.     In less than two weeks, the 15th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC will open in Copenhagen to renew greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets set by the UNFCCC Kyoto Protocol, the first stage of which expires in 2012.

BEIJING, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- China will raise gasoline and diesel prices both by 480 yuan (70.28 U.S. dollars) per tonne from Tuesday, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) announced on its website Monday.     The benchmark price of gasoline will be 7,100 yuan a tonne and that of diesel 6,360 yuan a tonne, according to the NDRC.     The retail price of gasoline will climb by 0.36 yuan per liter and that of diesel will rise by 0.41 yuan per liter.     The country adopted a new fuel pricing mechanism, which took effect on Jan. 1.     Under the pricing mechanism, the NDRC will consider changing the benchmark retail prices of oil products when the international crude price changes more than four percent over 22 straight work days. BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Six Chinese nurses were awarded the Florence Nightingale medal on Tuesday for their prominent contributions to health care.     Chinese President Hu Jintao, who is also the honorary president of the Red Cross Society of China, conferred the medals on the nurses at the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing.     Premier Wen Jiabao and senior leaders including Li Changchun, Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang also attended the awarding ceremony.     Chinese nurses have made great contribution to the country's humanitarian cause, said Vice Premier Hui Liangyu at the awarding ceremony.     A total of 28 nurses from 15 countries worldwide won the award this year.     The Florence Nightingale medal, which is the highest international honor for nurses, is being given for the 42nd time since its introduction in 1912.     "It honors exceptional courage and devotion to caring for the victims of armed conflict or other disasters, or exemplary service and a creative and pioneering spirit in the areas of public health or nursing education," according to the Web site of the International Committee of the Red Cross.     The award is named after Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), an English nurse known for her pioneering work to improve the care of sick and wounded soldiers during the Crimean War (1853-1856).     A total of 54 Chinese nurses have won the award since the country began to recommend candidates for the award in 1983.

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday assumed the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of January.     China will perform its duty as the rotating Council president in an objective and fair way and work with other Council members to maintain international peace and security, said Zhang Yesui, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, in a recent interview.     China will do its utmost to make sure that the Security Council works in a smooth and efficient way, Zhang added.     The Security Council presidency rotates among the Council members in the English alphabetical order of their names.
